Assessments
Formative Assessment:
S.O.L - 4.12 - Identifying polygons.
The teacher can bring pairs of students to a round kidney table and give them grid paper and give them simple polygons to illustrate or explain in writing. The teacher can also give the students a Polygon Sort/Triangle Sort (click either one for printable) and have them discuss the shapes together and have them sort them. Ask them to sort the Polygons by either parallelograms and quadrilaterals or by the three different types of triangles. Ask them questions such as: What are the three different types of triangles? What is a parallelgram? What is a quadrilateral? Observe and record their strengths and weaknesses.
S.O.L - 4.10 - Identify points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles, including endpoints and vertices and also identify representations of lines that illustrate intersection, parallelism, and perpendicularity.
Teachers can give this fun assessment to the students to judge their knowledge and to see if they have mastered the material. Also, have the students try a bonus question on the back: Did you find any intersecting, parallel, or perpendicular lines? Explain?
Summative Assessment:
This is a great simple Unit Test for fourth graders. It will give you a great estimate of how well your students know the material. The assessment pages are 8-9 and there are also a good crossword puzzle and more!
