Station 8: Make Geometry Creatures!
- Skill/Content and Objective: S.O.L 4.11 - Manipulating geometric figures and identifying the relationships between components of a figure.
- Materials: One set of geometry shapes (Circles, squares, rectangles, cones, cylinders, cubes, pyramids, spheres, octagons, hexagons, triangles), drawing paper, notebook paper.
- Description of Station: Students need to have fun with geometry, so have them experiment and play with them here. Have a pair of students create their own creature one at a time. Then have them trace it on a piece of notebook paper and write down the steps required to make his/her creature including the specifics shapes that they used to make it. Exchange notes and the picture and have the students try and figure out their partners creature. Students will have the Math Talk Card for reference if he/she is having trouble with the notes.
- Ideas for Differentiation: Teachers could take away the picture and have the student try and figure it out with just the specific names of the shapes. Could also start small with a few shapes to get the hang of it and then move on to the more complex figures to force them to think more about it.
- Formative Assessment: Teachers can collect the notes and pictures from the students after the station and have the students write in their notebooks what new figures did they learn today and what they learned about figures after the station. You could also have the students select, draw, and describe the characteristics of his/her figure of choice.
- Resources:
- Here are some good sorts to use for this station, have your students cut them out or you may laminate them ---> Polygon Sort, Quadrilaterals Sort, 2D Shapes Sort
- Math Talk Card
