Station 9: Decoding ABC Symmetry
Skill/Content and Objective: S.O.L 4.11 - Students will discover lines of symmetry within the letters of the alphabet.
Materials: See the printout worksheets of letters on page 71 or you could even take this set of letters which should work just fine---> ABC Sort
Description of Station: This station will have students trying to find Symmetry within the letters of the alphabet and create a secret code with just the letters with one line of symmetry. Therefore students will also get to sort the letters into groups: 1) Letters with one line of symmetry, 2) Letters with no lines of symmetry, 3) Letters with two lines of symmetry. If students have time have them write a secret code using just one half of the letters with lines of symmetry in them. Or you could choose to have the students complete the "I Can" List as they go through the letters.
Ideas for Differentiation: Students can also do these with shapes from the resources posted below, under Resources. Students can also do the "I Can" List to make sure they are on the right track.
Formative Assessment: Have the students write down in their notebook or a piece of paper, what they learned about symmetry? How did you know which letters had symmetry? How? Explain or illustrate. How did you strategies did you use to find symmetry within these letters? Or collect the "I Can" Lists.
Resources:
- Here is the sorting tool, you could use for Formative Assessment or just to challenge the students to think more about it---> ABC Symmetry Worksheet.
- Here is the "I Can" List for this station.
- Here are some shapes you can use while differentiating your station: Triangle Sort, Quadrilateral Sort, and Quadrilateral Sort 2.
