Station 4: Creating Symmetry
Skill/Content and Objective: S.O.L 4.11 - Students practice learning symmetry and reflection.
Materials: One deck of cards and a dividing line (ruler or meter stick)
Description of Station: This station will have students creating an exact reflection of a shape or form on opposite sides of a dividing line. Students will take turns forming their cards then the other partner will go. Add a new card to the mix for more practice on reflection.
Ideas for Differentiation: Teachers can choose to add shapes or geometry figures to the mix so the student will have to show the same reflection on the other side. Add in larger shapes and smaller shapes to make sure they understand that a reflection has to be a congruent or the same as the other side. Could also practice with translation and rotation. Students could even put a shape down and have the student draw an exact replica of it and put it down on the other side.
Formative Assessment: Have the students write down in their notebook or a piece of paper, what they learned about reflection? Also, have them illustrate an example of how a shape or geometric figure looks like reflected.
